2.1. Working in Law: Professions and Education
Part A: The Split Profession vs. The Unified Profession
1. The United Kingdom
Distinct branches: Solicitors & Barristers
- Solicitors: Largest part of the profession. First point of contact. Work in law firms, draft contracts/wills. Limited audience rights (lower courts).
- Barristers: Advocacy specialists. "Instructed" by solicitors (no direct public access usually). Self-employed, share "Chambers".
2. The United States
Fused Profession: Attorneys-at-Law
There is no distinction between solicitors and barristers. A lawyer is called an Attorney.
Once admitted to the Bar, they can both advise clients in an office and represent them in court.

In-house Counsel
A lawyer employed by a corporation (e.g., Apple) rather than a law firm. Handles internal affairs.
Magistrate
Judicial officer in lower courts. In UK, often laypeople (volunteers) assisted by a clerk.
Judge
Public official appointed to decide cases. Usually experienced barristers/solicitors.
Pupillage
The apprenticeship year for a trainee barrister (shadowing a senior).
Bar Association
The professional body that regulates lawyers.
